Mainstay’s most important “supporters”, the horse’s left hind shoe — light steel, with a toe calk, outside sticker braised on with copper — hangs above Rose’s mantle. Fourteen nail holes were available on his shoes (regulation shoes have only eight holes for nails). Rose also shod Eve Foul’s Moon Rock, winner in 1964, and Judge Beacon, the 1959 winner.
Since placing a flat shoe on the foot can make for slipping on certain surfaces, trainers have a full selection of heels, toes and sticker amendments to add for further purchase. Some of the more common heels and toes are shown on page 9. The “shoe board” was photographed at the Laurel Park flat track in Maryland; Virginia steeplechase courses do not allow the use of the stickers shown on the final set of hind shoes. Virginia races also require that toe grabs, most often found on the front shoes, be less than 1/16th of an inch in height.
