ine community organization called Headwaters was established for just that purpose. It fosters academic excellence by engaging the entire community. For example, Headwaters obtained a $200,000 Greve grant to aid effective school management. It awards mini grants to teachers and academic awards to students and supports the mentor program to assist students needing extra help.

The School Volunteer Program offers many opportunities for adults to give a little of their time. Substitute teachers are needed to step in occasionally when a regular instructor has to be absent. When did we last have a teacher recognition dav? They deserve our appreciation and thanks and a reasonable income.

Meanwhile there is a new drive for excellence in the Rappahannock School system. Spearheaded by Mary Ann Biggs, one goal is entry into the prestigious International Baccalaureate Program. This program requires the achieving of international standards of curriculum and quality of learning. To do so means increased emphasis on reading, writing, classic literature, history, science and mathematics.

Other subjects getting attention are philosophy, physical fitness and special seminars on leadership. School leaders are also looking for expanded extracurricular activities to occupy high school students after classes, to create a user-friendly atmosphere at the school where “hanging out" is both fun and healthy.
