Softball
The Varsity Lady Panthers played three games this past week as did their JV sisters. Two of those games were Bull Run District foes and one was the Lady Panthers from Page County High School. In the end it didn’t make any difference as the “Girls of Summer” combined for six wins, against three schools by both the Varsity and JV teams from Rappahannock County.
There were lots of highlights, but the real fireworks were provided by senior Gwen Johnson against the Lady Tigers from Brentsville. Johnson hit her first high school grand slam home run, as she collected 6 RBI’s on four hits, including two home runs, both out of the park. It was definitely a day to remember for the All-State catcher, as she led a 13 hit, Lady Panther attack that defeated Brentsville by the score of 14 to 4.
Back at home, the JV Panthers were locked in a real pitching duel. Freshmen Rachel Gall’s single in the bottom of the 6th tied the score at 1 to 1. The pitcher, sophomore Brittany Thornhill, recorded 8 strikeouts and drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 7th inning, as the JV side stayed undefeated with the 2 to 1 victory.
Thursday saw the both girls teams in action against Page County. The varsity won their game 2 to 0 and improved their overall season record to 8 and 0. The JV side stayed home and hosted the JV Panthers from Page. The JV girls also maintained their perfect season record with an exciting 6 to 5 win.
Friday, April 19 saw a return to district play, as both teams squared oft against the Lady Eagles from Clarke County. At home the varsity secured their 2 to 0 victory behind the always reliable pitching of junior Rachel
