The Red Menace was missing some key players but thought that beating the old folks would be a relatively easy task; the parents team, however, put in a fine effort in their victory, unconcerned about the sprains and strains they’ll be suffering for the foreseeable future. Next game is on Saturday, April 27, vs Orange 5; and the team will certainly bounce back and be ready to play.
The U14 Hornets traveled away from the hive on Saturday to Orange. As has been a consistent theme so far this year, the Hornets got better as the game progressed. They completely dominated the second half of play. There was good pressure late in the first half, also: Chasidy McGlothlin dribbled right up the middle through a couple of Orang-ites, broke into the Goal Box, and a foul from behind yielded an opportunity for a penalty kick.
Rhonda Jackson’s powerful foot was behind the penalty kick attempt that screamed past the keeper and rose in altitude just over the goal mouth. The half ended at 1 - 0 Orange advantage, scoring on a dribbler of a shot.
The second half started with the Hornets swarming right at the Orange opponents; beautiful take-aways, great passing down the wings; solid pressure all over the field. It was clear a Goal was uppermost in every Hornets mind. Andrew Kohler had a number of great runs up the middle, through numerous defenders to put the ball in the goal, but each attempt was thwarted at the last moment. Juan Tisera turned in another great performance pushing the ball up hard on offense and back checking well back into the defensive 18. Sam Harlow delivered a tenacious performance at midfield challenging every ball and progressing up field in proper fashion.
Also well worthy of note, the Hornets received excellent midfield teamwork play from both Patrick and Andrew Treanor. In addition, a few newer Hornets showed very promising signs that they know how to do the midfield swarm with the best of them, Katrina Bigelow, Anna Owens, and Mayalene Barrier.
There was a moment when it looked like the Hornets would deliver a stingigoal); Rhonda Jackson launched a high arching corner kick that almost found a Hornet Head. Intense.
All of this up-field pressure was only possible with great “push it out and up the wings” defense, delivered by Josh Makela, Ry Wellemeyer, and Jeremy Riggleson. Delivering another solid Keeper performance, Tom Pendleton made well over 10 saves, punting quickly to the midfield comers enabling the offense to swarm again.
