The sheikhs from oil-rich Dubai keep trying to win America’s most famous race, and they keep trying to do it the wrong way: by training their horses in their desert kingdom. Essence Of Dubai sports “earnings” of $1.3 million, but $1.2 million of that came in the UAE Derby, where the money was put up by ... his sheikh owners themselves.

This horse might be a very nice colt, but he hasn’t been prepared properly to win the Derby. Some day the sheikhs will win the Derby. Not this day.

Buddha may be a genuine contender. He’s in good hands, has a great pedigree, and has a running style that is perfect for the Derby, as he demonstrated while winning the Wood Memorial in good fashion.

Still, he’s another who hasn’t run much, and his odds are likely to be less than they should be, considering his experience. If he’s a great horse, he’ll win, but that’s the question. This one seems very attractive.

That’s how I see it three weeks out. I’ve slyly praised enough of the contenders that I can claim that I had the “winner” no matter who wins.

Got to cover my bets.
