Rappahannock Youth Soccer League played its third weekend of games, Saturday, April 20.
Jim Oyster’s Red Rockets played Jeff Hazel’s team, Rapp Grapes, at RCES. It was a titanic struggle between two great teams from Rappahannock — that ended in tie. Katie Hartman got her first start, and Patrick Foley played very well for the Red Rockets. Ty Bigelow showed outstanding hustle on a number of plays. The coach said he had never seen the kids play with so much “heart’’ and was very pleased with the effort.
Coach Hogan’s U-8ers, the Blue Panthers, had a bye this weekend and are resting up for next week’s game with Madison 1.
The U-10 Terminators played against the “other” U-10 Rapp Dragons Saturday morning. Both teams played stupendous! Scorers for the Terminators were Bennett Eastham - 4 goals; Bryan Shafran - 2 goals and Gary White - 1 goal.
Will Mullany played a strong defense and Connor Settle played outstanding goalie. Way to go to both of Rapp’s U-10’s!
The U-10 girls, the Rappahannock Hurricanes, faced Orange for the second week in a row, winning again 42. This game was much more hard fought, with Orange challenging our midfielders and fullbacks much of the game. We’ll have to work harder in practice this week on midfielders and fullbacks supporting and backing up each other. The offense carried the day today with passing and lots of pressure on the Orange goal. Isabelle Eastham, Morgan Flournoy, Joslyn Smith and Marcella Wallace all scored with great support from Sarah Hazel, Katherine Huang, Brittany Stephens, Kendra Settle and Meredith Reeve.
Seven members of the team, and their families, went to RFK on Sunday to watch the Washington Freedom play Brandi Chastain and the San Jose CyberRays. Our soccer players are lucky to have two professional soccer teams, the Freedom and DC United, playing nearby. The kids love the stadium atmosphere and the excitement of watching big league soccer.
The RSL Coed U12 team, aka. the Red Menace, had their game with Orange Team 6 cancelled Saturday and rescheduled for the near future. Since the rain had also cancelled their previous practice, the coach called an open scrimmage for the team to play an assortment of parents, older siblings and other available soccer players.
