“We are hoping that this new series will to bring additional people into the sport,” said Diane Jones, VGCA director. “With this added incentive, the Virginia Gold Cup Association hopes to encourage more horses and riders to participate.
“Our first race, Casanova, was a huge success, with 19 horses entered,” she said.
The series consisted of seven designated races at point-to-point races held throughout the spring.
The seven race locations may change from year to year. Each race offers a $1,000 runners’ reward, divided equally among owners of horses which start. The first four finishers in each race are awarded 5-3-2-1 points respectively toward the accumulative award and eventual series champion.
Middleburg’s Kinross Farm currently leads the series with three-time division winner Fields of Omagh.
