Laffit Pincay, Jr. If Laffit can iinpart some of his magic, this colt could be the one. A decent bet at 5-1 or so, he’d be a great bet at 10-1 or more.
Repent owns a stakes victory at Churchill Downs, always a plus as some horses simply do not like that racing surface. This one has that in his comer. Yet he comes into the Derby after spending the winter and spring running against the lesser lights among the 3-year-old colts, and winning in unimpressive style.
He’s never run fast enough to take the Derby, so it’s doubtful that he will get the job done on May 4 without astonishing luck.
Saarland has the pedigree to be a great racehorse, but his race record is spotty. Still, the trying distance of the Derby tends to separate the wheat from the chaff, and that often happens because some horses have the pedigree to get the job done and others do not.
