He was an officer in Army intelligence when he was right out of law school and, according to another friend and admirer, a “damned fjne Foreign Service officer, too.” He probably has poured close to every dime he ever made into his collection and his house in the country. With his offhand dry wit, generously salted with George Carlin-type language on occasion, this Brooklyn Italian paisano speaks Spanish like a native, without accent and with all the right intonations and modismos of a native latinoamericano.
Now divorced, Pete has a grown daughter, with whom he is close, who lives in London.
Casa Cecere’s valuable objets d’art and antiques are everywhere, as are his very collectable and increasingly pricey art d’kitsch that are generously scattered throughout this remarkable “collection.” Some of the latter are really fun. In particular, I was absolutely bowled oVer with howls of laughter at “Helen,” that fabulous “junkyard art” of a stuffed woman sitting on a sleep sofa in the living room of the lower level. “Helen” closely resembles the star of Greater Tuna with her big dark glasses and funny wig, shapely legs, and a highheeled shoe just about to come off.
Robert Howell, the well-known black folk artiste near Richmond, assembled this lovely creature. Mr. Howell’s work has been reviewed in scholarly art publications and is illustrative of the work discussed in a recent “salon” discussion of junkyard
