blocking the view. The sun's steady track along the Ridge is noticeable these days, a little further north each evening, as it returns to the Northern Hemisphere. They say this motion is actually the planet wobbling in its orbit like a tiring top, but on an evening when the earth is warm and it seems you could reach out and touch the mountains, such an idea is particularly hard to grasp.
“Henry, do you knowr what I saw a couple of nights ago?” I said. “A w hite skunk. I mean this guy was almost all white.”
“A Number Five”, he said, “Hardly worth killin’ “.
It hadn’t crossed my mind to kill it, but the idea that killing a white skunk was “hardly worth it” intrigued me. Where was the element of value in other skunks?
“Now, Henry, what do you mean?” his wife Barbara spoke up. “You all used to kill white skunks.”
“Sure, Woman, but most years we’d hardly get a quarter for ‘em. Number One’s was best. Mostly all black,” Henry went on. “Got a good price most years for them, provided of course the hide wasn’t damaged”.
