Racing silks had their origin at Newmarket racecourse in England late in the year 1762, when 17 owners selected their “own” colors and agreed that such design would be reserved to the owner and worn by the rider of horses raced in the owner’s name.
Still used today, modern racing colors are provided by the owner each time a horse races. The silks are his personal property but must be registered annually — with either the National Steeplechase Association (for jump racing only) or American Jockey Club.
Some states that are racing jurisdictions also register colors separately for owners.
