Exactly when that next year Warrenton sportsmen organized the first' Virginia Gold Cup has never been determined, but it is known that the first public announcement of the race was in the March 25, 1922 Fauquier Democrat, precursor to this very newspaper. The date was, curiously, slated for April 18, a Tuesday, and the initial race was called the Virginia Hunt Cup.
