Blue Grass Stakes, though in slow time. He’s been first or second in all of his nine starts, and he teams with Edgar Prado, one of America’s top jockeys. He has shown the capability to rally from off the pace, always handy in the Derby, which generally features a hotly-contested pace. The question for him is whether he will get a clean racing trip, which is problematic in the overcrowded Derby field.
Still, it’s hard not to like this colt. He’s done everything asked of him so far, and he seems to be peaking at the right time. He could wear the blanket of roses after the Derby.
Johannesburg was undefeated in his career until his lone Derby prep. The connections of the Irish-based colt were undecided about a Derby try three weeks before the race, and with good reason. Even if he makes the field, this colt is not prepared for the rigorous Derby. He’s a sucker bet, a throw-out. The rest of the contenders would have to fall down foi this one to win.
An intriguing newcomer is the lightly-raced Medaglia d’Oro, but there’s the rub. He showed plenty when winning the San Felipe Stakes in March, taking the lead, being passed by two horses, and then rallying to win. Ther he ran a bang-up second in the Wood Memorial Nevertheless, he would have to be an extraor dinary individual to win the Derby with onlj four races under his belt.
Still, he’s an intriguing prospect, and he has the winningest jockey of all time on his back
