The year was 1922. Worldwide, it was one for the record books.
Oceans away, Benito Mussolini seized power of the Italian government and Danish physicist Niels Bohr received the Nobel Prize for his work with the atom and study of radiation. The Irish free state was established, and Britain at last gave former colony Egypt its independence.
Closer to home, the first aircraft carrier, the USS Langley, was commissioned at Norfolk. In sports, the old New York Giants routed the World Series, 4-0-1, from cross-city rivals the New York Yankees.
And in quiet post-war Warrenton, a sleeping giant stirred.
