*» 1 i • f | | What, began as an pioneering international steeplechasing series seven years ago has ended with the cancellation of England’s 2002 Marlborough Cup. ■ The UK’s only timber race, the Marlborough Cup was founded in 1995 after Count Konrad Goess Saurau traveled to America and discovered timber.
“I am fascinated,” Goess Saurau said then of the American twist to the very British sport of steeplechasing. “It was taking the speed and competition of steeplechasing and making it more of an endurance and jumping contest as well.”
Goess Saurau attended the Maryland Hunt Cup and the Virginia Gold Cup, taking the idea of racing over solid fences — as opposed to soft, brush hurdles — back to his home near Barbury Castle west of London.
Though English and Irish ’chase trainers never embraced timber racing, in the beginning or end, nonetheless the Marlborough Cup attracted a bit of interest in its first two runnings. And when, in 1997, the innovative World Timber Championship was announced, the bar was raised.
