Before choosing a gravestone, consult with the cemetery to see if there are any limitations or whether a simple grave marker is required. Gravestones are customarily made of granite because this durable stone gives a hint of eternity. Just as important are the words that will accompany the name and dates on the stone. Gravestones are enduring monuments to the deceased that will engender remembrance among the living. With this in mind, try to think of a phrase, line of poetry, or expression used by the deceased that most completely encapsulated his or her spirit. Also consider whether an etched image of the deceased on the gravestone will help perpetuate the deceased’s memory in a most tangible w ay.
