The temperature of the surface of the sun is always at about 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
On Tuesday, after the eight minutes it took that energy to shoot across the cold void of space, force itself through the earth’s atmosphere and start heating up the air in Rappahannock County, it was still hot enough for the thermometers of the National Weather ■ service to register a high temperature of about 96 degrees. At that temperature, objects in the distance can appear to be wavering, whether in the heat radiating up from hot VDOT blacktop or just in the addled brain of the heat stroked observer. #
These high temperatures have had a noticeable affect on the behavior of the denizens of Rappahannock County.. In every pasture in the county, livestock stay clustered under trees and around water tubs. The pedestrian friendly streets of Little Washington stay relatively empty as even scenery hungry tourists opt to remain in air-conditioning. The popular county list serve Rappnet, usually dominated by charged political discussion, even had a message thread last week on the county's best swimming holes. ';i:7 £
