Monty Cross said in his written statement that he met with Mercer and Sgt. John Arstino (Cooper’s immediate supervisor) on June 28. He said he and his wife also shared their concerns directly with Fauquier Sheriff Charlie Ray Fox Jr. on Thursday.
“The sheriff came out to our house to meet with us and see where the pens were,” Monty Cross said. “He spent about an hour with us. He explained that he is not at liberty to discuss personnel issues. (But) he is very disappointed in the way this was handled.”
Cross added that Fox assured them that the matter is being investigated.
Both Monty and Robin Cross said that Fox apologized “multiple times.”
Although they are furious about what’s happened, they said they are not holding the sheriff personally responsible.
“We cannot speak more highly (of the sheriff),” Robin Cross said. “Unfortunately this reflects badly on him.”
Fox confirmed on Friday that he met with the couple and said they “discussed the incident and looked at how it could have been handled differently.”
The sheriff also confirmed that Cooper’s alleged involvement in the matter is being reviewed.
