Tburists,cows, and amateur political pundits are smart, because the high heat of Rappahannock County is dangerous.
The Virginia Department of Health issued a special Health Advisory warning this week on the dangers of a hot summer day.
“As temperatures across the state reach record highs, the Virginia Department of Health urges residents to take precautions against the heat-related illnesses,” stated the advisory.
According to Dr. Jerry Martin, of the Rappahannock Medical Center, the most serious of “the spectrum of heat related illnesses” is the one commonly referred to as heatstroke, although it is also sometimes called heat prostration. “Basically your body loses the capacity to regulate its temperature,” explained Dr. Martin.
When the body starts to become overheated, it distributes blood from the vital core of the body out to the extremities, where the blood can shed excess heat through the cooling action of sweat evaporating from the skin. If this evaporation is no t enough to sufficiently cool the body, heatstroke can set in.
“The body temperature starts to rise, and the person becomes progressively dizzy and lightheaded. Body temperatures can rise to 104 or 105 degrees,” presenting the same dangers as an
