‘Fragments of a Plan’ was a five-part tale told from several Afghani and Pakistani perspectives over the period of one year.

‘Punjab Nights’ in its final form roughly follows the same plot line as ‘Fragments,’ but the thing Burns says was most interesting about revising the text were the unanticipated changes.

“If you’re going to put your finger on the one thing that’s most satisfying, it’d probably be the characters that take off and develop on their own without your planning it,” he said. “Those surprises are the big payoff to writing fiction.”

‘Punjab’ ' takes place in 1980s Pakistan, where Bums once worked for the Harvard University Development Advisory Service.

His three-year stay there helped him craft a fact-based political backdrop for the novel.
