The Bower
In the 1850s, perhaps also flush with toll revenues, Andrew purchased another home nearby, The Bower, a stone structure built by John Skinner before the Revolution. This would later become the best known of the various Barbee residences. The ruins of the home are still in SNP, on the east side of the Blue Ridge along the South Fork of the Thornton River, near where US211 goes from two to three lanes.
William, by now, was out of real estate and heavily into creativity. So in 1858 it was off to Florence to do some serious stone shaping. Recognition and financial success in the art world quickly followed. Two of William’s sculptures, The Fisher Girl and The Coquette, still recognized today as important works, fetched upwards of $10,000.
