Fast-forward to 1848 when William and Mary had a son Herbert who, it would turn out, was also bom with rocks in his head. In fact, 1848 was a vintage year for both roads and rock carving. The Virginia Department of Public Works established a new stock company to perform major improvements on the New MarketSperryville Turnpike. At Andrew’s urging, William became a major shareholder in the company. The new and improved toll road was finished in 1849 and, of course, ‘if you build it, they will come’. Come they did and with the increased road-use also came an endless stream of tolls. With this source of income, life was good for William and law practice lost some its allure.
