“We’ve always had respect for what it takes to jump a fence on a horse, and after trying it a couple of times, now we just think these guys are crazy,” said Salinas Bentley. “This will certainly be entertaining.”
“We wanted to make a sport that was exciting; easy to understand and multi-discipline so we could bring the different facets of the equestrian community together,” said Voorhees, president of Equestrian Entertainment Partners, which conceived and produced the acclaimed “Inside Eventing” show for the Animal Planet channel. “DerbyCross draws on steeplechase, eventing, show jumping and polo, a great start.”
Citing the often difficult-to-understand penalties of eventing and show jumping (65 penalties for a fall, 20 for a first refusal, 1/4 of a penalty for a time fault), Voorhees said DerbyCross scoring will be easy: Four penalties for a rail down, or a refusal, or a fall; one penalty per second “over” the fastest cumulative time.
Riders will compete one at a time over the course, with times and penalties recorded for a team total at the end of the competition. Prize money will be awarded, along with a prize for the team with the most spectator support.
DerbyCross will begin at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 29, with the regular Saturday twilight polo game to follow. DerbyCross is expected to be complete in time for polo; those attending DerbyCross will get free passes to attend polo that night, Salinas Bentley said.
Tailgating spaces are sold for $150-$300, with general admission $10 per car. Many sponsorship packages are available for sponsoring teams, fences, prizes and other options.
