The original road through the Gap was established by Orange County in 1740. (Culpeper later split from Orange and Rapp. Co. from Culpeper in 1833) No VDOT then, so roads got built by requiring all eligible male *tithables’ to contribute six days labor/year though slaves or indentured servants could be substituted for the ‘main man’ (nonetheless, perhaps a good reason to hold back a percent or two from that collection plate).
