Dr. Chappell was particularity interested in the idea in order to connect seniors who need assistance with prospective teachers who need affordable housing.
Many applicants for teaching positions in the Rappahannock Schools system find housing costs too expensive for someone with a teacher’s salary to afford.
“I know that the cost of housing is a red flag for many people who look to teach in Rappahannock County,” Chappell said.
He also noted that many teachers live in cities outside the county and commute into work.
A 2005 year-end report on Housing Market trends in Rappahannock County, reported the average rent to be $1,253 for 10 total rentals during the year.
“The housing market for Rappahannock County is retirement and weekend housing,” said County Administrator John McCarthy, “It’s difficult for people to compete with that.”
The program proposed by Dr. Chappell has received very little response. So far only one Rappahannock homeowner has filled out a form.
After consulting with local rental prices, she priced an extra home that she owned for $900. Dr. Chappell mentioned that this price was below the average price of rentals in Rappahannock County.
