According to both Dr. Martin and the VDH, the way to control these dangers is to stay out of the heat and consume plenty of fluids. The dangers of heatstroke are greater to small children and the elderly, as well as those on some medications.
| One foil to that danger comes from Rappahannock County itself. According to County Administrator John McCarthy, Rappahannock has a “call back* system wherein elderly or at risk citizens can sign up with the Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Office to receive a visit from a deputy if they don’t call the RCSO by a certain time each morning. Despite the high temperatures and the heat, Dr. Martin says he hasn’t had to treat any cases of heatstroke this year. ;• “I see much more heat exhaustion,” a less serious condition that creates a loss of energy in a person exposed too long to too much heat, explained Dr. Martin. ** -.
Ann Sjjrieker, chief of the Washington • Volunteer Fire Department, said that so far she hasn’t had to treat any more cases of heatstroke this year than normal.
