I made a fist and shook it
with tight lipped pride. From my command post at Massies Corner, I was relieved and thankful. There was no back slapping. No celebrations. Only the feeling of partial closure that comes with restoring the much needed sense of security to our citizens in Rappahannock County. It was approximately 11:20 p.m. on Sunday, July 9th.
July 2nd our dispatcher phoned me at 6 a.m. with news of a probable stabbing at 712 Gid Brown Hollow Road. The deputy arriving at this address had just confirmed this third party report to our office from a 911 operator in Culpeper. This was not going to be a Sunday without hard work, case and resource management issues, and the frustrations associated with a fleeing subject that had an hour head start. K9 units were en route from neighboring jurisdictions and the Virginia State Police (V.S.P.) quickly reassigned available troopers to assist the Sheriff’s Office in establishing a perimeter to hopefully contain the suspect. We had a manhunt.
