I wondered if Mr. Allen s sources predictions were true, that the new Virginia law will “hurt the overall industry.” So I decided to check it out for myself. I took it upon myself to head back over to the Sperryville Comer Store and see exactly which wines were on the shelves. Of the more than 60 wines available to consumers, nearly 20 were from Virginia wineries. Other wineries have their product front and center as well: wines from Australia, New Zealand, Oregon, California, France, Italy, etc. Sure is funny, then, how “the legislature has handcuffed the industry where we can never hope to be more than a novelty item.” The fact that nearly 33% of the wine on the shelf at just this comer store comes from local wineries sure is novel. Must just be an accident.
