The Polings can tell you all about Raggedy Ann, whose birthday is given as September 7, 1915. That’s the day the patent (#47789) was awarded to Johnny Gruelle, who had found an old, faceless doll in his attic, drawn a face on it and given it to his daughter. The doll and subsequent children’s books became enormously popular in America. In the 1920s Ann’s brother Raggedy Andy was bom, doll and books together.
So Paul has his fire engines, Gerty her dolls. The dolls are all over the museum, and appear through their house, too: on top of the cabinets, over the mantle, in the tables.
