woolly bears for your annual winter forecast. Or better yet, let someone else do it. The Hagerstown Ibwn and Country Almanack’s woolly bear forecast is based on around 20 caterpillars collected by local school children. Last year they predicted a mild winter.
Woolly bears also do their winter weather prognosticating at several fall festivals held each year in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Ohio. The good folks of Banner Elk, NC, celebrate their woolly worms (what southerners call them) in the annual Woolly Worm Festival that attracts thousands, and features parades, caterpillar races and, of course, weather predictions. People bring trained worms (names like Patsy Climb and Dale Wormhardt), and race them up strings to determine the one to make the much-anticipated winter forecast. Last year the winning worm was Niko who, in marked contrast to the Hagerstown worms, predicted a mostly cold and snowy winter. No two weather forecasters ever agree, do they?
