Chandler said about 5 percent of the 661 voters at the Washington Fire Hall used the touch screens. She said the demographics of the Hampton District may be a major reason for the lopsided numbers at the Washington precinct.
“This is an older district and people like voting the way they used to,” she said.
Chandler said another factor was that during busy times, people were more likely to fill out a paper ballot than wait to use a touch screen in use by another voter.
Some voters said they did not know they had the option of using a touch screen, but would have tried it had they known.
“I didn’t know I had a choice,” said Amissville resident Susan Hatley, who added that she would have used the touch screen had she known it was available.
