Ut course, stodgy old scientists have pooh-poohed the weather-predicting ability of woolly bears. It turns out band widths are determined by development and vary considerably in any population. As the caterpillar grows, black hairs are replaced by red ones so that older caterpillarSi have broader red bands. If anything, the band width is an indicator of the mildness of the preceding season, not an indicator of what’s to come.
But this shouldn’t keep us from celebrating the furry little creatures once a year. And now is the time of year when we see them frantically running across the roads. Usually just before the first frost, which suggests they’re searching out good overwintering spots. Or maybe just working out to keep warm. Who knows?
