days of late spring, feed and develop all summer, emerge as adults, lay eggs and die. No trials or tribulations. Their eggs hatch in early fall and develop into the second generation woolly bears. These grow up fast, store as much food as possible and then face the bleakness of winter howsoever they can. Sometimes partially frozen.
Next spring the survivors thaw out, feed, pupate and emerge as adults, mate and lay the eggs that will become the summer generation of caterpillars, one that retains no memory at all of the hard times faced by their parents. (You’ve probably identified with one of these generations already).
