Most corporations use a technology called “VPN” (Virtual Private Networks) to allow their employees to connect to their office networks over the public Internet by using encryption. VPN does not work over dial up connections and, worse for me, it does not work over the broadband satellite connections either. The reason for this is the satellite is far out in space so there is a certain latency (delay) in the signal.
Even on a sunny day my Hughesnet, formerly called “Direcway”, satellite is no panacea. It works fine for streaming video and audio but the uplink side is scarcely faster than a modem—older models even use a telephone line for outbound communications. So it works fine for people who want to surf the web. But if you want to do actual work, this has some real limitations. For this reason I use a remote control software called “gotomypc” that lets me operate my desktop computer at work from my home. This even works over a dial up except of course I cannot talk on the phone and connect to my office at the same time since my cell phone does not work.
