Virginia continues to lose forest land at a rate of 20,000 acres annually, and larger tracts are subdivided into smaller and smaller parcels. This parcelization makes it increasingly harder to sustain the viability of forest management and forest ecosystems. McEvoy will address this issue during the first of two presentations, “Forest Parcelization Leads to Fragmentation of Purpose.”
McEvoy will focus on “Estate Planning for Woodland Owning Families” during his second presentation. Seventyfive percent of the forest land in the area is owned by private individuals. Good planning to maintain land through generations requires a long view extending beyond a single individual’s life span. Proactive thinking is needed to ensure that woodlands are passed on to future generations intact, and the goals, objectives and legacy are fulfilled without undue burden on heirs.
