ne auims are caiiea isaoena tiger moths, Pyrrharctia isabella, easily recognized by bold tiger stripes on wings and bodies. Tiger moths are a very diverse, mainly tropical, group of moths characterized by brightly colored adults and furry larvae. Caterpillars of other common tiger moths in the county are the yellow woolly bears of Virginian tiger moths, the solid black woolly bears of giant leopard moths and hickory tiger moths, and fall web worms, which you’ll seldom see since they stay inside webby nests they build in deciduous trees.
Of all the tiger moth caterpillars, though, the banded woolly bears are the most beloved. And the most famous. Legend has it (and you should always be suspicious when you hear this phrase) that the fall woolly bears can predict the severity of the coming winter. Each of their 13 segments represents one of the 13 weeks of winter, and the black ones indicate the times you want to be in Florida.
