Some of you know me as the

author of two wine books, including one on Virginia wines. But in addition to writing and farming wine grapes in Rappahannock County I, like most people with kids and responsibilities work a day job. I am a supervisor at a cellular phone company—the irony of this is I do much of my work from my farm where it is impossible to make a cell phone call.

During the day I oversee the work of a dozen people who work in computer security. Most of us are in Virginia while I have one employee in Texas, one in Kansas, and five in Bangalore, India. Two employees work from home full-time, others part-time, while I drive into the office two or three days per week. What makes it possible for all of us to work together from different points on the map are cell phones, land lines, and the Internet. But no one can call me when I am outside on my farm—this is a major problem.
