Practice safe disposal
When doing spring cleaning, be extremely careful with those empty containers of household cleanining products. The Virginia Extension Service warns that some products are labeled with special disposal instructions. Some should be rinsed with water, for example, while others like caustic drain cleaners should never have water added. Secure the original cap and wrap the container in newspaper. This prevents leaks and also makes it harder for a child or pet to get into it. Never use empty containers for another product. Not only do other people not know what is inside, the two chemicals may combine with disasterous results. Don't pour leftovers into the drain or toilet, unless that's where they are supposed to go.
