One bright spot emanating from Del. Guest’s press conference was his refusal to rule out a bid for re-election to his House seat. Although he had previously announced that he would not run for both seats — another admirable decision given the difficulty of serving his constituents while campaigning across the Commonwealth — with his withdrawal from the governor’s race the situation has changed.
We don’t see any other candidate in the 31st District race — Republican or Democrat — with Del. Guest’s considerable experience and expertise. We hope that he will reconsider his decision not to seek re-election.
As the Minority Leader in the House of Delegates, Del. Guest performs a vital function in speaking for the “loyal opposition,” in his words. Losing his voice in the House of Delegates would be a loss not just for his Republican comrades and his constituents in the 31st District, but for Virginians across the state.
He is a thoughtful and intelligent man, who is not afraid to take an unpopular stand — like his unsuccessful attempt to win approval of pari-mutuel racing a few years ago — when he is convinced that it is in the best interests of his constituents.
That willingness and desire to champion causes important to his district has been a hallmark of Del. Guest’s service in the Virginia House. We hope that he will reconsider his earlier decision, and offer to continue his service to his 31st District constituents.
