tive control being used on gypsy moth outbreaks. Rather than acting as a stomach or nerve poison, it disrupts insect growth and development. The chemical interferes with the formation of chitin which is a substance found in the body wall of insects. Chitin is not found in mammals and birds.
Dimilin may impact the other plant feeding insects and aquatic insects and crustaceans (shrimp, crayfish, etc.) because these animals depend on chitin in the formation of their body wall. Because of this concern Dimilin will not be sprayed over open water or perennial streams.
Bt is a naturally occurring microorganism and is not toxic to humans. The strain of Bt planned for use in this project is specific for the caterpillar stage of several moths and butterflies. Bt can be applied to vegetation adjacent to open bodies of water without any adverse effects to floodplain or wetland organisms with the exception of the caterpillar stage of some non-target moths and butterflies.
