Coleman and Trible squabbling, he labeled their behavior “ridiculous.” “That's a campaign?” he asked with a look of disbelief.
To the group of reporters covering the Republican primary, Guest said, “With all honesty, my friends, you all are as much to blame as those candidates. You cover the blood and guts, and you don’t cover the issues equally.”
Guests called upon the GOP candidates to talk about issues and unity. “A divisive campaign will tear us apart and certainly hand over the governor’s office to the Democrats for the third consecutive time,” said Guest.
In response to Guest’s comments, John Miller, Trible’s press spokesman, said, “Paul Trible has and will continue to run a positive campaign, talking about the issues.”
Guest concluded his statement by saying, “This announcement is not one through which I retire from the war. In the words of a Marine commander in Korea who had been surrounded by hoards of Chinese troops, 'Retreat hell, I’m attacking in a new direction.’”
What new direction remains to be seen. As of yet, Guest has not ruled out the possibility that he might run for re-election to his seat in the House of Delegates.
