Admirable leadership
We’re disheartened by the news that Delegate Raymond R. “Andy” Guest Jr. has pulled out of the race for the Republican nomination for governor.
In making the announcement last week, Del. Guest faced up to the reality that his candidacy was always a long-shot, crippled by lack of a well-known name and less-than-adequate funds behind the campaign. In that respect, we applaud his willingness to confront an unconfortable truth.
The criticisms he leveled against his opponents, former Senator Paul Trible, former state Attorney General Marshall Coleman and Congressman Stan Parris, were also right on target. Too much of the campaign has been spent with the candidates sniping at each other, while they have paid only lip service to a few easy issues — like drugs and crime.
During Del. Guest’s long career in Virginia’s House of Delegates, he has always shown an ability to balance the often-competing interests of the widely different counties that comprise the 31st Legislative District. We’re sorry that he won’t get a chance to exercise that ability at the state level — from the governor’s office. As Virginia continues to grow, and urban, suburban and rural interests offer increasingly different agendas, the state will need someone who can perform that difficult balancing act.
