Seven jurors took just 35 minutes to find Sheriff John Henry Woodward not guilty of slandering Mildred Cebula in comments he made to the Board of Supervisors about the food served to the jail’s inmates.
In a civil action the former owner of the Hampton Inn brought last spring, she alleged that the comments made by Sheriff Woodward during the January, 1988 meeting of the county’s supervisors had caused her physical and emotional distress, had publicly humiliated and embarrassed her, and had led to such a loss of business in her restaurant that she had been forced to close.
Mrs. Cebula’s suit, which was originally filed as three separate charges, was reduced to two counts before the trial. One count, that Sheriff Woodward conspired with the Board of Supervisors and the public to “willfully injure” Mrs. Cebula, was withdrawn by Mr. O’Neill before the trial began.
