Recycling shed opens May 13
The Rappahannock Anli-Litter League and You (RALLY!) announced that the county's recycling shed at the landfill in Amissville will officially open on Saturday, May 13. According to litter and recycling coordinator Nina Stamer, RALLY plans an informal celebration of the occasion, from 9-11 a.m., with refreshments and balloons. The public is invited to attend, and bring along their aluminum and glass (separated into clear, amber and green) for recycling. Newspapers, Mrs. Stamer noted, should still be taken to the trailer behind the Amissville fire hall. The landfill is located at the end of Route 639, two miles east of Amissville off Route 211. The recycling shed is next to the public convenience area at the entrance to the facility. It will be open the same hours as the landfill (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Hillsdale gets lottery terminal
Hillsdale Grocery, on Route 211 just east of Massie's Corner, will get the county's first "on-line" terminal, the Virginia Lottery announced Monday. According to public affairs spokesman Paula Otto, lottery officials surveyed "nearly all” of the 6,000 lottery outlets in the state to determine which would be among the first 1,500 to get the on-line computer terminals, which will allow players to pick their own numbers for the nightly drawing. Hillsdale will be the first of the 10 retailers in the county to get a terminal, but Ms. Otto said another could be added if sales warrant it. "It is an ongoing process ... we will watch sales very closely." The on-line "Pick 3" lottery game is scheduled to begin Monday, May 22, with the first drawing held that evening and broadcast on Virginia Public Television stations at 7 p.m.
