“The program is in need of funds and hojJbs to get some exposure,” said Gold Cup executive director Janis Norment. Parks and Rec will have an exhibit with more information, said Pat Alton, who is coordinating the project.
Other pre-race events include llamas, a celebration of the Morgan Horse bicentennial and a parade of carriages. A parachutist will descend on a target formed by four BMWs parked in a square. BMW of North America is sponsor of the four-mile Gold Cup Race.
Race organizers have also taken steps to avoid the parking and traffic problems that plauged the rainsoaked event last year. Tickets will not be available at the gate on the day of the race, which should speed up traffic into the site.
Also, last year a whole section of parking was closed due to rain — that section has enhanced drainage this year. There are also 22 acres of new parking spaces, leased by Great Meadow from foundation president Arthur W. Arundel.
“We aren’t ordering rain this year,” joked Ms. Norment — last year it rained for a week before the race. The National Weather Service is calling for sunny skies and temperatures in the 70s for the end of the week and the weekend.
Corporations and large companies have gobbled up the seven sponsors’ tents, seven chalet tents and six corporate tents. But they are all inside Members’ Hill, and the $30 general subscriber car pass does not include admission to that area. No passes to Members’ Hill will be available the day of the race.
