One possibility would be to add the third module and use it as a meeting room while we’re acquiring the books,” Dr. Young said.
Mr. Mathews suggested that the project could be bid three ways: as the whole thing with the meeting room and three modules, as the whole thing with the meeting room just a shell, (ind as just the three modules. He said he had toured the Samuels library in Front Royal which has a small meeting room that is rarely used.
“There are quite a few functions for which we need a separate room,” Mrs. Sims said.
Mr. Mathews said that he envisioned the exterior being covered by some sort of weatherboard siding that could be stained. Inside he said only limited areas would be defined by walls. Most areas would be defined by placement of shelving and furniture, he said. What we need next he said is an “equipment layout. We need to know what equipment is needed and what’s here that’s useable to take.”
He said he had not yet determined whether the library would have to be built on a slab on grade or whether it could be built over a crawl space. He said the crawl space would be more desirable for making future changes in wiring as more electronic equipment was put to use. “You’re going to be given a PC with a Fax machine,” he said. He said with that equipment the library would be able to get information from everywhere.
“Then we don’t need any books,” Mr. Fletcher commented.
“Oh, yes we do,” Mrs. Sims said.
Mr. Mathews explained that the library would eventually need four other computer terminals. One would be at the circulation desk, another for reference and two to replace the card catalogue. “There’s a good reason for keeping this (the card catalogue)," he said. “It’s unlikely that if five people wanted to use the card catalogue, they would all need the same drawer,” he added.
“Is there any way we could eventually have a recycling shed at the library property?” Mrs. Stamer asked. She said she was looking for a more central location for recycling than the landfill site.
“We might be able to make some money on that,” Mr. Fletcher commented.
Mr. Mathews said such a thing might be built near the entrance to look something like a “gate house.”
