Ozymandias The NSHA’s '86 timber horse of the year won the Gold Cup in ’87. He came back in the spring of '88 to place at My Lady’s Manor, and then he galloped third at the ’88 Gold Cup. In the fall his victories included the Chronicle Cup and the International Gold Cup.
He is undefeated this season having won at Hillsboro Cedar Knob with trainer Bill Wofford in the irons and then again at Louisville’s Oxmoor race April 15.
Wofford fell at that same race meet in another contest, so his brother-in-law and top rider Gregg Morris will pilot the chestnut this Saturday at Great Meadow.
Friendly Retreat Mrs. Douglas V. Nicoll’s. Friendly Retreat has left an indelible mark on Virginia’s point-to-point circuit this season. From his first win at Rappahannock with trainer-rider Don Yovanovich to his most recent win of the Eustis Cup at Oatlands, Friendly Retreat has delighted spectators by his unchallenged romps down the stretch.
Friendly Retreat ran his first race under the colors of Californian Shea Robert Sheahan. Yovanovich guided the horse easily to his first timber victory, a comfortable nine lengths at the wire.
The next week at Blue Ridge the silks changed to gray and white, the colors of Mrs. Nicoll. Here Yovanovich took an early lead, challenged only by Fisher on Call Louis until
