Mr. Heddleston and Mr. Von Fange said they have talked with Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke about the legal ramifications of a community standard for obscenity. They plan to pursue a citizens’ committee, similar to the Family Life Education Committee which is now assembling a curriculum for the county schools, to explore the possibility of writing such a standard.
It would, he explained, ultimately be presented to the Board of Supervisors for its approval. After a public hearing and an affirmative vote by the supervisors, it would become part of the county’s ordinances, and have the power of law.
The Commonwealth of Virginia, Mr. Heddleston said, “has thrown it back to the communities” by setting up the community standard guideline. “Why shouldn’t we do something about it?”
“We can laugh at it,” Mr. Von Fange added, “or we can try to keep it away from our kids.”
That brought agreement from Mrs. Sickles. “I have two small children myself. Sometimes you can’t just go with the flow. Sometimes you’ve got to make a Stand.”
