Both Mr. Heddleston and Mr. Von Fange emphasized that their effort is not to censor the type of entertainment available at Panorama Video. Some R- and even PG-rated movies, they pointed out, have nudity, strong language and violence. But even the worst of those movies have some plot, some vehicle which moves the film besides sex.
These so-called “adult” movies are different, Mr. Von Fange said. “I hate to even use the term ‘adult’. No one is old enough — this is obscene . . . and everyone knows it. It’s not the plot people look for when they watch these movies, it’s the action. That’s what they want to see.”
But the plotless ones, he added, are not the worst. “I’m more worried about the ones that have a plot.” Those are the ones, Mr. Von Fange said, which perpetuate the “rape myth, that every woman secretly wants to be sexually used. These tapes and books lead to an increase in violent crimes, specifically rape.”
