Dogs that have tested negative for heartworms can be started on one of two approved preventive medications. Since heartworms are spread from dog to dog by the bite of a carrier mosquito, the preventive medicine must be given when mosquitos are active in a given area.
Dr. Roberts said, “One preventive drug is given once a month while the second type must be given daily to be effective in preventing heartworm development.”
Treatment for heartworms, while almost always successful, is a serious and involved process that usually requires hospitalization and laboratory tests, said Dr. Roberts.
The signs of heartworm disease most often noticed by dog owners are an intolerance to exercise, a persistent cough, and weakness or lack of normal activity, he said.
